Special/Research Interests

Anthony’s research interests focus on the genetics of colorectal cancer with collaborations taking place with world renowned centres to better understand the development of colorectal cancer. He is also researching on diagnostic modalities in diagnosis colorectal cancer. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented national and international lectures.

Professional and Personal profile

Mr Anthony Antoniou graduated from Cambridge University in 1993. He trained in East Anglia, the South East of England and London. He undertook a laparoscopic fellowship at The Hamlyn Institute at St Mary’s Hospital prior to being appointed as a Senior Clinical Lecturer/ Honorary Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at The Institute of Cancer research/ The Royal Marsden Hospital in 2006. Having completed five years as a Senior Clinical Lecturer, he was appointed to St. Mark’s Hospital, the internationally renowned centre for the treatment of Intestinal and Colorectal Diseases.

Anthony is a high volume laparoscopic colorectal surgeon treating patients with colon, rectal and anal cancer. He also performs complex cancer surgery on patients with locally advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer, one of only a few surgeons in the UK to perform this type of surgery.

His interests are focused on the treatment of patients with recurrent and locally advanced colorectal disease, as well as those with benign bowel pathology.

As an academic surgeon, his interests lie in the treatment of both benign and malignant colorectal disease, and is involved in collaborative research in cancer with world renowned centres. He has published widely on colorectal disease.

Mr Antoniou is Joint Cancer Lead for colorectal and anal cancer, as well as Joint Cancer Lead for complex cancer at St. Mark’s Hospital.

Anthony’s clinical practice encompasses all aspects of colorectal surgery, both benign and malignant, with a special interest in colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and benign coloproctology. He also has extensive experience in laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal surgery.
